Early Childhood Investment Corporation

Governor Granholm Annouces Executive Committee

Governor Granholm, in her state-of-the-state address in February, announced the formation of an “Early Childhood Investment Corporation." On July 26, the governor’s office released the names of 14 newly appointed ECIC Executive Committee members.

The ECIC will invest in and support community-wide systems that help children enter kindergarten ready to succeed in school and in life. In announcing these appointments, the governor’s office said, “The Michigan Early Childhood Investment Corporation is a non-profit public corporation to coordinate state and local efforts to promote early childhood development activities in Michigan. It is charged with establishing guidelines for early childhood development activities to be implemented throughout the state in partnership with local intermediate school districts. The effort is funded by public and private funds.”

The first duty of the executive committee will be to select an executive director and staff to carry out the day-to-day work of the corporation. Shortly thereafter, the corporation will select the first communities, seven or so, in which it will make investments and offer support.

"Community” is defined as an intermediate school district. ECIC investment in the initial ISDs will begin this fall with a target date of October 1, the start of fiscal year 2005-06. Investment in all of Michigan’s 57 ISDs is expected by 2010.

These appointments do not require the advice and consent of the Michigan Senate.
