It sounds
trite, but often every vote counts.
A few years
ago, the mayor of Ann Arbor was elected by one vote over his
opponent - one vote out of 21,269 cast.
In 1992,
seven votes in a State Representative district determined
which political party controlled the Michigan House of
Representatives. And, of course, the presidency of the
United States swung on a 550-vote margin in Florida - out of
many millions of votes that were cast.
The
materials made available to you in this section permit you
to do voter registration. If early childhood educators
register, say, 1000 voters over the next two years, that act
alone will probably change an election here and there in
Michigan. Some of the many successful political careers in
American history have begun with a one- or two- vote
election victory.
