Michigan AEYC Launches “Big Hearts, Big Impact” Campaign at the 2025 Annual Early Childhood Conference
The Michigan Association for the Education of Young Children (Michigan AEYC) is excited to announce the launch of the Big Hearts, Big Impact campaign at the 2025 Annual Early Childhood Conference, taking place April 13-15, 2025, at the Amway Grand Plaza Hotel and DeVos Place in Grand Rapids, Michigan. This year, Michigan AEYC, the largest affiliate of the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), is inviting conference attendees to participate in an inaugural community outreach effort—socks for the unhoused, a hands-on initiative aimed at supporting individuals experiencing homelessness in Kent County.
Nearly 10,000 people across Michigan reportedly experienced homelessness in 2024, and socks remain one of the most requested and needed items in shelters. To address this critical need, conference attendees will have the unique opportunity to hand-dye socks to be donated to those in need, under the guidance of experts from the Detroit Dye House.
“As early childhood professionals, we understand the importance of providing warmth, comfort, and care—both inside and outside of the classroom,” said Erica Willard, Executive Director of Michigan AEYC. “Through this initiative, we hope to extend that same compassion to the unhoused members of the Grand Rapids community.”
“We see and talk to our neighbors every day. We heard from a local shelter that socks were one of the most needed items for the unhoused population. We just try to fill a hole. When you dye with us, you always start with a pair of socks for our neighbors” shared Alex and Tammy, Owners of the Detroit Dye House
Once completed, the donated socks will be distributed through Family Promise of West Michigan, an organization dedicated to supporting families experiencing homelessness by providing shelter, case management, and community-based solutions to help families achieve lasting stability. This collaboration provides an opportunity for conference attendees to make a tangible difference, giving back to the community and supporting families in need.
“Our goal with the Big Hearts, Big Impact campaign is to create an opportunity for early childhood educators to engage in meaningful community service while attending the conference,” said Paula Spencer, Program Manager for Michigan AEYC and coordinator of the socks for the unhoused effort. “Dyeing and donating socks may seem like a small act, but for those experiencing homelessness, it represents warmth, dignity, and a reminder that they are not forgotten.”
